California tops states with most dog bites

On Behalf of | Dec 17, 2021 | Dog bites

Even the casual viewer of reality court TV shows may think that dog bites are extremely common. Indeed, some of these shows paint the picture of nefarious dog owners with furious dogs around every corner. It may surprise our readers that, if they are in California, especially in Los Angeles, they live in a place closer to this crazy scenario than any other place in the country.

By the numbers

Over the summer, the U.S. Postal Service released its statistics on dog attacks against mail carriers from 2020. On top of that list was California with 782 dog attacks, up from  777 in 2019. Near the top of the city list is Los Angeles,  with nearly 60 attacks. Only Houston, Texas, and Chicago, Illinois, had more dog attacks

Released as part of an awareness campaign

The USPS released these numbers over the summer as part of its National Dog Bite Awareness campaign. That campaign sought to raise awareness about the potential danger of dog attacks. The campaign emphasized that dog owners are responsible for the actions of their dogs, and owners must ensure that their dogs are secured for the protection of mail carriers and the general public.

Words of wisdom

The USPS warnings to Mill Valley, California, dog owners are words of wisdom that apply to every dog owner throughout California and the United States. Owners are responsible for their dogs, and may be liable to those that are injured. Under California’s dog bite law, owners may be held strictly liable, meaning that the injured do not have to prove that the owner was negligent in order to hold them liable.
